The expected score formula
Course rating + course handicap = the score your index predicts on that tee: the rating (scratch benchmark) plus your strokes. It lands within ±3 for most rounds — closer than any "gut feeling," which is why the index is golf's greatest invention: a portable, honest performance estimate.
Why good rounds beat averages
The best-8-of-20 design makes the index a PEAK-form measure: your handicap describes what you CAN do, not what you usually do. The expected score is therefore an upper-middle estimate — better days happen (the WHS assumes them), blow-ups happen (and get capped). Both are part of the design.
Using the prediction
Expected scores power game decisions: match play strokes, betting games, and — most usefully — round expectations that prevent the "I should be playing better" spiral. The index says you WILL shoot ~your number; the variance around it is golf, not failure.
